Unless there was a secret directive from Coach Todd Bowles, it's hard to comprehend why Grizzard, the offensive coordinator, opted for such a conservative approach. With a quarterback who was recently in the MVP conversation and a stellar receiving corps featuring a Hall of Fame candidate and a potential Offensive Rookie of the Year, the decision to stick primarily to the ground game was baffling.
But here's where it gets controversial... Grizzard's passing attempts were mostly short, well short of the first down markers. It's as if he had a personal vendetta against throwing the ball downfield. Could there be a hidden clause in his contract? Or is he channeling his inner Mike Glennon?
The most damning stat of all? At halftime, despite completing a decent number of passes, Baker Mayfield had a meager 41 yards. That's right, 41 yards! And by the end of the third quarter, it was a paltry 60 yards. This wasn't a college game from the 1940s or a military academy running a triple-option offense.
With such a talented receiving group, it's hard to believe they were consistently covered. Were the Stinking Panthers' secondary that good, or were they just that invisible?
This level of incompetence is simply unacceptable.
