Feeling the EDSA traffic blues? You're not alone! The Philippine National Police (PNP) is stepping up its presence to help ease the pain of ongoing road rehabilitation on EDSA, one of the busiest roads in the Philippines. On Friday, December 26th, the PNP announced plans to deploy more personnel to manage traffic and keep things running smoothly during the construction. But here's where it gets controversial...
Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, the acting PNP chief, explained that the increased deployment aims to lessen the impact of the roadworks on drivers and commuters. He highlighted the expectation of heavy traffic and the PNP's readiness to assist with traffic management, peace and order, and even prevent road rage through a visible police presence.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has kicked off concrete reblocking and asphalt overlaying projects along EDSA. These projects are expected to cause significant traffic congestion, given that hundreds of thousands of vehicles use the major thoroughfare every day.
While the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and local government units (LGUs) are also deploying traffic personnel, the PNP, through its territorial units and the Highway Patrol Group (HPG), will provide additional support. They will be stationed at strategic locations along EDSA and on alternative routes to help guide traffic flow.
Rapid deployment teams will also be ready to respond to accidents, vehicle breakdowns, and other emergencies. And this is the part most people miss... The PNP will be leveraging technology, including CCTV monitoring, traffic sensors, and traffic apps, to monitor congestion in real-time.
The DPWH initiated the concrete reblocking and asphalt overlay on December 24th at 11 PM, and the traffic impact was immediately felt the following day. The DPWH has already released schedules for the rehabilitation works, and the PNP is urging motorists to plan their trips in advance.
